Miracle Cure (Audible Audio Edition) Harlan Coben Scott Brick Orion Publishing Group Limited Books

"Miracle Cure" is the second novel by Harlan Coben. In the preface written by the author, he states he does not feel this work is representative of his later works. I am glad it is available, and I am glad I had a chance to read it. However, I agree with the assessment of the author.

This novel has an unlikely plot. It is about the hysteria surrounding a specific disease. In that regard the story is based on history. But the novel is a somewhat unwieldy story about individuals involved in the research of the disease and various intriques.

This novel is a marginally better novel than the author's first novel, "Play Dead". There are times that the story held my interest and was a "page turner". There were times that the novel had twists that completely surprised me. At other times the story drags. At times I felt it was a public service announcement in the guise of a novel.

Additionally there is a part of the story that takes place in a "red light district". There are times that part of the story descends into unnecessarily graphic descriptions of sexual activity that seems little more than salacious and added essentially nothing to the story. Speaking for myself, as an adult, I would never consider recommending this novel to a youth.

In summary, as I am studying this author, I am very glad to have had a chance to read this early effort. It is a somewhat better novel than the author's first novel. However if one simply wants to enjoy the writing of a mature, accomplished author, one might skip this novel and select a later one. Thank You...

Miracle Cure (Audible Audio Edition) Harlan Coben Scott Brick Orion Publishing Group Limited Books Reviews

I absolutely love Harlan Coben’s books. They are so enthralling that I find them hard to put down. At first I thought this one read a little like another novel I had read, but soon I realized it wasn’t. Great read. Thank you Mr. Coben.
This early Coben effort kept me absorbed from start to finish. Strong characters, a very intriguing Mason story and several equally interesting subplots were all seemingly seamlessly interwoven. That just shows how strong the writing in this book is, because it is not that easy to pull off such a feat. Bravo!!!
In the updated introduction, Harlan Coben asks first time readers of one of his books to please get a newer book of his and read it first before judging him as an author. I know why after starting this book. I've read all of his books except for the Mickey Bolitar series and I love his books - but not "Miracle Cure". I've read two other books since starting and getting a little over half way through this book because I wanted to read something entertaining. I will finish "Miracle Cure" but only because I don't like leaving books unfinished. The characters are flat and the dialogue seems stilted. I agree with Mr. Coben - read another of his books.
Author Harlan Coben has inserted a signed note in the front of this new printing of "Miracle Cure" that urges readers who haven't read any of his other books to put this book down immediately. He goes on to critique the story and explain that it's one of his first novels. I respect his honesty and wish that I had taken his advice about trying another book.

"Mircacle Cure" has a lot of problems. The most egregious is the storyline, which revolves around the HIV/AIDS crisis and the search for a cure; and is badly dated. It includes a fallacious debate about the morality of AIDS sufferers, where more than one person posits that victims contract the disease because they are gay or drug users. More than more than hurtful comments, they totally omit any reference to the millions of non-drug using heterosexual victims of the disease worldwide. Who the principal victims of AIDS were was a known fact even in 1991 when this novel was written.

"Miracle Cure" includes a serial killer and a high-level conspiracy to torpedo research being done to develop a vaccine to stop AIDS. Those elements are the book's greatest strengths although the conspiracy angle is never fully resolved at book's end. The novel's characters--a pro basketball player, a popular TV journalist, politicians, scientists and assorted family members--had interesting possibilities, but they are not really fully developed. The one exception is the serial killer who is described in careful detail, but ultimately becomes nothing more than a device to further the storyline.

Author Corben in his opening warning about the book states that for all of the book's flaws, he still admires it for its energy and risk-taking. I don't share that view. This just isn't very good writing. So why reprint it now? The publisher must have seen a way of squeezing some extra bucks out of the author's present reputation as a leading bestseller. It's a shame that Coben didn't at least insist on revising some of the weakest parts of the book.
Miracle Cure. Yes, the title says it all. One thing that interested me about the book is the fact that it was published in 1991, the same year that Magic Johnson announced that he was HIV positive, which, at its core, is pretty much the very same plot of the novel. Like Play Dead, Harlan’s first novel, the book has a central theme of the world of basketball, and also both books make use of hiding or changing one’s identity, somewhat similar to the same kind of schtick that we see in the Mission Impossible movies.

That said, I was taken by the prescient aspect of the book which took on and handled the very difficult topic of homosexuality in relationship to the changing norms in relationship to that issue.

From a structural point of view, I was quite taken by the extremely well-crafted choreography of organization, following so many threads and doing it in a pretty much seamless fashion. If I had two complaints, I would say 1) that for the first 250+ pages of the book, only two of the three business partners are really described; and 2) the extraction scene in Bangkok truly lacked believability. Nevertheless, I could not put the book down and highly recommend it.
